Travel Guides
Until recently it was difficult to get hold of adequate information about Montenegro, but the situation is changing rapidly. With the publication of brand new guidebooks by Rough Guides and Lonely Planet in 2009 there are now no less than five English-language guides dedicated solely to Montenegro.
In addition to the single country guides, short descriptions of Montenegro appear in four of Lonely Planet's regional guides listed in the Overview section: Europe on a Shoestring, Eastern Europe, Mediterranean Europe, and Western Balkans. Naturally the last of these includes the most detail.

Montenegro - The Bradt Travel Guide (3rd edition published March 2008) - Annalise RellieEarlier editions of this guide seemed to be aimed at a rather different market than Bradt's other guides to the region, lacking some of the practical information required by independent travellers. I've been told that the current edition contains some improvements; one notable addition is a section on excursions outside Montenegro's borders. I can't resist adding a personal note: the photo of Kotor on the front cover was taken by ... me. |

Montenegro In Your Hands (1st edition published June 2008) - Vladimir DulovićFor a long time Bradt was the only publisher offering a general guide to Montenegro in English, but at last they have some competition. I haven't seen this guidebook myself, but it appears to follow the same format as the older "Serbia In Your Hands" (see the Serbia Books page). |

The Rough Guide to Montenegro (1st edition published April 2009) - Norm LongleyI haven't yet seen this new addition to the Rough Guide range, but I have been very happy with the standard of the Romania and Slovenia guides which were written by the same author. |

The Mountains of Montenegro - Cicerone Guide (1st edition published June 2007) - Rudolf AbrahamMontenegro has great potential for walking and trekking, but until recently it has been frustratingly different to find information in English about the country's mountains. This guide aims to fill the gap, with descriptions of hiking trails in Durmitor, Orjen, Prokletije, and a number of other mountain ranges. A few one-day hikes are included, but the focus of the book is on longer treks for which you will need to carry a tent. |

Background Reading
My reading so far hasn't included any books specifically about Montenegro, but several of the works on Balkan history listed in the Overview may be of interest. There are reasonably substantial sections on Montenegro in several books dealing with the former Yugoslavia, including Through the Embers of Chaos and Black Lamb and Grey Falcon. Wild Europe includes interesting material about the romantic portrayal of the Montenegrins by some travellers.
